A few kilometers from Catania is the “noble” city of Acireale . An important economic, political and cultural center from the Greek age to the end of the Middle Ages, Acireale has always been populated by noble and wealthy artisans. According to legend, the name of the city derives from the & nbsp; myth of Aci and Galatea, which tells of the love between the shepherd Aci and the divine Nymph Galatea. According to the story from the blood of the young man, killed by the jealous Cyclops Polyphemus, the Aci river was born, which gives its name to the city. Later, during the Spanish domination, with a decree of 1642 Philip V attributed to Aci the additional name of “Reale” as a state-owned city. The ancient city was located on the promontory of Capomulini, now a fishing village. Only in 1326 the town was moved to the current promontory with the name of Aci d’Aquilia Nova. During the sixteenth century the city consolidated itself as a mercantile reference point, this brought considerable wealth to the city and caused various guilds and religious orders to settle in the city. Even today, in fact, Acireale is called the city of a hundred bells. The city is known for the Carnival celebrations, which each year attract visitors from all over Sicily and Italy. The characteristic element of the celebrations are the allegorical-grotesque floats, the masked groups and the flowered floats, typically Acesi, that parade along the streets of the city.
Piazza del Duomo is the largest and most important of the squares of Acireale, in the Catania area, as well as being a real open-air museum, thanks to the monuments that overlook it, and the decoration of the flooring, renovated in 2009 on a project by Aldo Scaccianoce, Vito Messina and Paolo Portoghesi, architect known for the project of the Mosque of Rome. This trio is responsible for this concentric ring construction of the new flooring, desired according to a geometric project that recalls the shapes of a Gothic rose window, similar to that of the facade of the Cathedral. On the square, as already mentioned, there are important city monuments, including the Cathedral of Maria Santissima Annunziata, from the 15th century, the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, from the 16th-17th century, the Municipal Palace of the 18th century, and the Palazzo Modò , in which the Eldorado Theater was housed.
