Taormina

Arroccata su una scogliera a picco sul mar Ionio, Taormina è uno scrigno di tesori che vale la pena visitare almeno una volta nella vita; è una delle tappe da non perdere nel vostro viaggio alla scoperta dei paesi più belli della Sicilia. 

La città, in provincia di Messina è una tavolozza di colori stretta tra l’azzurro del mare e l’imponente Etna. È una città antica, abitata da prima dell’arrivo dei Greci, costruita su una terrazza naturale che si affaccia sul mare. Greci e romani l’hanno dotata di strade, teatri e templi e gli Arabi poi l’hanno abbellita di giardini e fontane.

A 200 metri sul livello del mar Jonio, arroccata sul Monte Tauro e dominata dall’imponente e lontana sagoma dell’Etna, Taormina è una tappa obbligatoria per chiunque viaggi in Sicilia. Il suo spettacolare teatro greco-romano (ospita ogni estate il famoso festival del cinema e gli spettacoli del cartellone Taormina-arte), le sue viuzze, le sue piazze, le chiese, le naumachie, le bellissime spiagge, l’isola Bella, i suoi locali alla moda, i musei, le antiche torri sono solo qualche motivo per raggiungere la città della provincia di Messina.

Da non perdere una visita a Castelmola, il paese dei panorami, e qui sarà poi obbligatoria ed indimenticabile un bevuta di vino alle mandorle nel celebre bar Turrisi.

The city, in the province of Messina, is a palette of colors squeezed between the blue of the sea and the imposing Etna. It is an ancient city, inhabited since before the arrival of the Greeks, built on a natural terrace overlooking the sea. Greeks and Romans endowed it with streets, theaters and temples and the Arabs then embellished it with gardens and fountains.
At 200 meters above the level of the Ionian Sea, perched on Mount Tauro and dominated by the imposing and distant silhouette of Etna, Taormina is a must for anyone traveling to Sicily. Its spectacular Greco-Roman theater (every summer hosts the famous film festival and the shows of the Taormina-arte billboard), its narrow streets, squares, churches, naumachias, beautiful beaches, Isola Bella, its trendy clubs, museums, ancient towers are just a few reasons to reach the city in the province of Messina.
Do not miss a visit to Castelmola, the town of panoramas, and here a drink of almond wine in the famous Turrisi bar will then be obligatory and unforgettable.

• Teatro Greco di Taormina 

La struttura originaria fu costruita dai Greci in un punto panoramico incredibile da cui si può ammirare il Mar Jonio e l’imponente Etna. Su alcuni gradini è inciso il nome di Filistide, la moglie di Ierone II, il tiranno di Siracusa che probabilmente fece costruire il teatro taorminese. L’edificio fu ricostruito in età romana. Oggi nel teatro, che un tempo poteva contenere fino a 5000 persone, si tengono ancora concerti ed esibizioni. Qui trovate il calendario. Il Teatro Greco è una vera e propria terrazza di su mare da cui ammirare uno dei panorami più belli di tutta la Sicilia. 

The original structure was built by the Greeks in an incredible panoramic point from which you can admire the Ionian Sea and the imposing Etna. On some steps is engraved the name of Philistis, the wife of Ierone II, the tyrant of Syracuse who probably had the Taormina theater built. The building was rebuilt in Roman times. Today the theater, which once could hold up to 5,000 people, still holds concerts and performances. Here you will find the calendar. The Greek Theater is a real terrace overlooking the sea from which to admire one of the most beautiful views in all of Sicily.

• Duomo di Taormina

Non perdete una visita alla cattedrale della città dedicata a San Nicola, si trova nell’omonima piazza all’estremità di Corso Umberto. La chiesa è caratterizzata da una facciata medievale e da un bellissimo portone in stile barocco. 

Do not miss a visit to the city's cathedral dedicated to San Nicola, located in the homonymous square at the end of Corso Umberto. The church is characterized by a medieval facade and a beautiful Baroque style door.

• Villa Comunale

Un meraviglioso angolo di pace in città che era originariamente il parco dell’abitazione di Lady Florence Trevelyan. Il parco fu realizzato come un tipico giardino all’inglese in cui furono collocate molte specie di piante rare.

A wonderful corner of peace in the city that was originally the park of Lady Florence Trevelyan's home. The park was created as a typical English garden in which many species of rare plants were placed.

• Palazzo Corvaja

Il Palazzo Corvaja era la sede del parlamento siciliano nel corso del ‘400 e sorse sui resti di un antico foro romano della città. Oggi il palazzo ospita il Museo Siciliano di Arte e Tradizioni Popolari. 

Palazzo Corvaja was the seat of the Sicilian parliament during the 15th century and was built on the remains of an ancient Roman forum in the city. Today the building houses the Sicilian Museum of Popular Art and Traditions.

• Odeon di Taormina 

Si tratta di un’antica architettura romana su cui furono costruite diverse strutture. Probabilmente venne costruito su un più antico tempio greco nascosto dalla Chiesa di Santa Caterina che risale al XVII secolo. La cavea è divisa in cinque settori ed è circondata da una galleria in mattoni. 

It is an ancient Roman architecture on which various structures were built. It was probably built on an older Greek temple hidden by the Church of Santa Caterina which dates back to the 17th century. The auditorium is divided into five sectors and is surrounded by a brick gallery.

• Naumachie

Si tratta di una grande costruzione formata da un muro in mattoni rossi realizzata in epoca romana. Non si conosce l’utilizzo originale della struttura che è un grande ninfeo con delle nicchie. 

It is a large construction formed by a red brick wall built in Roman times. The original use of the structure is unknown, which is a large nymphaeum with niches.

• Casa Cuseni

Casa Cuseni è un bed and breakfast che ospita un museo di arte e letteratura. In questa antica residenza affacciata sul mare infatti ci sono passate personalità importanti come Truman Capote, DH Lawrence e Bertrand Russell.

• Monte Etna

Una serie di escursioni partono tutti i giorni e arrivano alla sommità dell’Etna. Nel caso non vi sentiate molto sportivi la passeggiata senza arrivare il cima alla bocca del vulcano merita ugualmente.

A series of excursions depart every day and arrive at the summit of Etna. In case you are not feeling very sporty, the walk without reaching the top of the volcano is equally worthwhile.

• Isola Bella 

Quando la marea è bassa Isola Bella si trasforma in una penisola. In tutti gli altri giorni è abbastanza vicina alla terra ferma perché si possa raggiungere in canoa o in funivia. Sull’isola si possono fare delle escursioni in barca per visitarla e nuotare nella grotta blu.

When the tide is low Isola Bella turns into a peninsula. On all other days it is close enough to the mainland to be reached by canoe or cable car. On the island you can take boat trips to visit it and swim in the blue cave.
